My Subarus all had small flaps in front of the rear wheels. Pretty sure my BMW does as well. Keeps stuff from getting thrown into the engine bay when in reverse.

It’s for aero to help control flow around the tires, pretty much the same reason F1 puts 9,524 elements on front wings to shape flow around the tires, but in this case much simpler.

They’re called Tire Spoilers, and they were on the old truck, too. And on a ton of cars. Aerodynamic parts.

My rx-7 has sort-of-mud-flaps in front of and behind three of the 4 wheels (one has a non-original fender which is missing them).
